Lucas is Here!

IMG_0062

My nephew is finally here! Lucas James was born on Saturday at 7:41pm -- a good week after the little stinker's due date. His stats: 8 lbs, 13 oz; 21 inches long; a good amount of hair; a sweet little nose; and the broadest shoulders ever seen on an infant. ;)

Jenni and Todd are already totally in love, and who can blame them? He is so darn cute. Well, you can all see that for yourself!

A Year of Smiles

Kendall is officially 1 years old, and I am still in denial. The letter is in the works, but until then, here is proof that my peanut is indeed 12 months old. Her smiles only hint at the happiness she has brought to our lives.

Love you, baby!

Fashion Friday: And So It Begins...

IMG_6289

We have officially entered Princess mode. I can't believe we are here, but we are. Emma is obsessed with role playing the Cinderella story. We read at least four princess stories a day. YouTube sing-a-longs are begged for daily. And I must sing a princess song before nap and at night. Whether I know the real words or not. Even at 4am potty breaks, I'm expected to spout out "A Whole New World" before either one of us can head back to sleep. It's not pretty, people.

And she's pulling Kendall in as well. Both wear crowns most of the day (Emma gets the silver, jeweled Cinderella crown, while poor Kendall gets the cheap plastic Jasmine crown), and dresses are put on at least two to three times a day. Magic wands are in hand, adorning us all with the "most beautiful gowns I have ever seen." And glass slippers of course.

We are not, however, being a princess for Halloween. Instead, Emma has decided to be a ballerina. Probably because at this point, dressing up as a princess wouldn't really classify as a Halloween costume, seeing as it is our normal attire.

Lately, we've been also sporting a bit of a princess attitude, which I am REALLY not fond of AT All. Three year old princess tantrums are not fun.

Life as queen certainly isn't all it's cracked up to be, but I suppose it's worth it. Now would someone just tell me where the maids are?!!!

Let's Talk About It: Duh!

Sometimes the things that come out of Emma's mouth take me back because they are so right on. It's even better when she has that "tone" that tells me she clearly thinks I should have already known the answer to my question.

A few examples:

* Emma is notorious for putting things in her mouth (still!). One day, her cheeks looked a bit "full," so I asked her what was in her mouth. Her reply: "Spit."

* In the middle of playing "people," Emma decides she must take her socks off, N.O.W. When I ask her why, she replies, "So my feet can breathe."

* Kendall is nearing the fireplace ledge for the zillionth time, so I am a little annoyed and tell her, "No, no, no Kendall!" Emma steps in: "Mommy, she doesn't know any better."

Yeah, I am pretty sure I'm going to be put in my place more than a few times as these years go by. (Somewhere my mom is grinning from ear to ear.)

Let's Talk About It: Heaven

So the other day, Emma and I are driving in the car, and we start talking about Heaven...

Emma: When I go to Heaven, Mommy, I'm going to give Jesus and God a big hug.

Me: That will make them very happy.

Emma: And it will be a party, right, Mommy?

Me: Yes it will.

Emma: And all my friends and family will be there!

Me; Well, sure. But it's your job to tell them about Jesus to make sure they are there with you.

Emma: I will, Mommy. And then all my family and friends will take an airplane to go all the way up to Heaven.

Me: Sure, sweetie. Something like that.

Tooth Number 4...

...is here. Top left middle tooth. Lots of crying going on around here!

Fashion Friday: K is for Klimbing

IMG_6332

Okay, so I am taking some creative license here, but as of right now, I can't think of a more fitting title.

Miss Kendall is quite the climber. She gets into EVERYTHING. Emma has always been curious, but as long as it was off the floor, I was safe. Not the case with Miss Monkey. Hence, the huge gash down the middle of her forehead.

Although to be fair, that actually happened on the way to climbing. As I tried to stop her from climbing Emma's wooden stool for the billionth time, she ran away from me (an often occurrence, even at 11 months!) and tripped on a rug. She fell right into the corner of the stool, leaving a huge goose-egg that scared me half to death. But after ice and lots of crying, she was good to go.

This little peanut constantly has some sort of bruising on her head, butt, and legs at all times. Seriously.

So much for my relaxed second child. :)

Let's Talk About It: Clear as a Bell

Not to be outdone by her chatty older sister, Kendall is talking up a storm lately. There are even a few words that I know are intentional and as clear as a bell: Ba-ba (of course!), hi (complete with a wave), and uh-oh! (the latest).

Unfortunately, the scream is still there, but not as often as other new gurbles come out. Her voice seems a little higher than Emma's, but that may just be the screeching. She is also getting very intentional with her playing, which is so fun to watch.

I love how even though I have been through all of this once before, I am still in awe of how these little ones grow up. God is pretty awesome.

Fashion Friday: I Finally Remembered!

I know, it's about time, right?! Anyway, loving Emma's eyes in this photo, so it won over a few cheesy grins and even the shoe shots. Happy Friday everyone!

11 months!

IMG_6194

Sweet Kendall,

Even though you will be getting THE letter next month on your first birthday, I wanted to write you one more before that milestone. It is all coming too quickly!

These past 11 months have been so eventful between the move, building, and all of Emma's milestones/struggles, that I want to make sure that you know NONE of it overshadowed you. In fact, you have been a light in my life these last few months, warming my heart with those cute dimples and making me laugh along with your sweet giggles. I am beyond thankful that God put you in my life.

Overall, I would describe you as sweet, but your personality intrigues me. Once again, I am reminded that you are a complex being that God carefully knitted together. I suppose you are what they call "a good natured baby" and love to show off that smile.

IMG_5776

BUT you also let us know when you are ticked, whether it be because you want your ba-ba N.O.W. or that Emma just knocked you over for the billionth time. A piercing, high-pitched screech is one of your trademarks. I'm hoping this ends soon.

Your determined spirit is also very evident. You know what you want and will do just about anything to make it happen. This includes carrying things twice your size until you fall over, and running away from me when I try to get something out of your mouth. You find ways around any barriers we put up and manage to find every single microscopic thing on the floor to put in your mouth. You are hard to keep up with, and I really can't turn my back for one second. Otherwise, you are doing things like pulling the floor vent out of the floor, or digging into the Cheerios hidden in the closed pantry door.

At 11 months, you are already a pro at walking. You've been doing it for almost 2 months now, so you have moved on to climbing. Emma wasn't really a climber, so you are officially my monkey. My favorite so far has been watching you hang from the oven. How did you even figure out this was possible?

IMG_6222 IMG_6221

And it's a good thing I have pictures of you crawling because I swear I blinked and you were on those legs.

IMG_5703 IMG_5807

It is so funny watching you walk around, especially because you are usually carrying something with you that is way too big for an infant to be carrying.

IMG_5899 IMG_6050 IMG_6047 IMG_5909

You LOVE to dance and bounce the second you hear anything that might sound like music. The other day the two of us had a little dance party while Emma napped. I can tell we're going to have lots of fun together in the years to come.

IMG_5778

I amazed at how much you have learned already. You say ma-ma, da-da, ba-ba, maaah! (for kisses), and more recently, puh-puh for doggie. Most of the time you talk in this sweet little whisper -- unless of course, you are hungry. Then that scream comes out.

You can wave bye-bye and hi, throw kisses, give hugs and kisses, do "So big!", play peek-a-boo, shake your head no, and make car noises as you play with Uncle Johnny's old cars. At first we thought this was a coincidence, but you have now shown us that you are in fact playing cars. You make a better "vroom" noise than I do!
IMG_6084 IMG_6085

You can roll a ball to me, and you even know to kick a soccer ball. I think this is all part of your trying to keep up with your sister!

IMG_6204

You are sleeping better now that we have put you on Prevacid. It has been a miracle worker. You sleep through the night and take two 1+ hour naps. Well, that is before you started teething again. Today, your right top middle tooth popped through, and it looks like your right eye tooth is also on its way out. I'm sure this means the left ones are not far behind. Hopefully sooner than later. You are quite sensitive, so this has not been fun for you.

I find myself turning to Tylenol much more with you than I did with Emma, but it really seems to help you. And you LOVE it. I mean LOVE it. Anytime you see the Tylenol dispenser or your Prevacid syringe, you get all excited. I'm not sure what this means, and it is a little disturbing. I guess I should be thankful you are so cooperative???

You play by yourself so nicely and really are a very good girl. You are busy and curious like your sister, but you are very content most of the time. We are working on getting you to stay still for books, but right now I can only get you to sit through Where is Baby's Belly Button. It's your favorite.

IMG_5725 IMG_5760

You really like playing with Emma's baby and Heidi the Hippo. When you were younger, you loved Heidi best, giving her loves, talking to her, and wrestling with her. The last few months, however, you seem to like baby dolls more. Emma isn't so crazy about this, so it's a good thing you might be getting one of your own for your birthday.

I can't even believe that in one month, you are going to be one years old. I have enjoyed every moment of these last 11 months, and truth be told, I am sad that you are entering toddler-hood. I truly want you to stay little forever. I want to be able to hold you in my arms, hear that baby giggle, and tickle those chubby legs. Just for a little longer.

I plan to savor every last minute of these next 30 days because I know that after you hit that one year mark, all sorts of developmental switches go off and you start turning into a little person. But for now, you are my baby. My sweet baby Kendall. I love you so very much!

Fashion Friday: First Day of School

IMG_6065

*I am a week late on this, but I've come to accept that this is now normal!*

Last Thursday, Emma had her first day of pre-preschool. One day a week, she is attending a Mother's Day Out program at my Mom and Dad's church. It is a structured program, but isn't officially preschool. It's just a fun place for her to play with friends, learn about God, and do arts and crafts. And she gets to wear her backpack, which makes her feel quite special.

IMG_6062

Of course, she had no problem adjusting to all of this. A fast hug and wave goodbye, and she was good to go. She quickly settled in with the toys and had no interest in Mom anymore. In my heart, I knew this meant she was ready for this. But was I?

IMG_6078

I was okay until I talked to other people about it that day. Then the shaky voice started, but only a few tears were shed. She is only gone for a few hours, and she really seems to enjoy it.

IMG_6082

IMG_6080

Her teachers are Ms. Kim and Ms. Patti. And her classmates are all boys, which was surprising. The teachers said it didn't seem to phase Emma though. That didn't surprise me!

Besides getting a little bit of a break, my favorite part of this whole "school" thing is picking her up and hearing about her day. Last week, I asked her how she liked the boys in her class. Her response: "They pushed me away." As I started to plot my revenge on a group of 3-year-old boys, I first asked, "What did you do when they pushed you?" And she said, "I was just trying to give them hugs and kisses."

Okay then. That explains that.

Emma's favorite part of the day is "playing with the beans." She also likes snack time because she gets to have juice. At home, it's water. Sometimes with a splash of juice, but usually just plain water. I think she's still unsure if it's okay for her to drink this tasty stuff because both times I've picked her up she has said to me, "Mom, can I have grape juice? Does it have milk in it?" It's almost like she thinks it's too good to be true! My poor sheltered child. ;)

And while I am proud that my Emma is independent, I will always remember picking her up that first day. As the door opened for the parents to come in, I could see Emma's eyes eagerly looking for me, as if for a second she was worried I wouldn't come. When she finally saw me, she came running, and we hugged tight.

What a relief for both of us to remember that she will always be my baby.

My Poor Second Child

I haven't written Kendall a letter since her very first one at 10 weeks, and I feel horrible. I just kept putting it off because I didn't want to throw it together, but now she's 10 months old.

So I will be writing a letter soon -- before the big 1 year letter -- but I wanted to get some things down before they are replaced with new cute memories. So here is a VERY random list of some things Kendall...

  • Thanks to her reflux, she "slept" in her swing for the first 3 months of her life.
  • For the next 2 months, she "slept" in her papasan until we bravely put her on her stomach.
  • She has a favorite purple blankie and a binkie at sleepy time, and she instantly knows what those two things mean.
  • She was practically sitting up by herself at 4 and 5 months because of her reflux.
  • At 6 months, she could roll herself up into the sitting position from the ground.
  • She started crawling on Father's Day.
  • She began standing shortly after that and quickly got the courage to move from one object to another
  • At 9 1/2 months, she was walking.
  • She's only received 3 vaccinations so far. (We are spreading them out. We didn't do this with Emma.)
  • She has a permanent bruise on her butt from all her falling. And at least one bruise on her head at all times. They do not stop her.
  • At 10 months old, I finally gave in. She is on Prevacid and wouldn't you know it, she is sleeping!
  • She has found her voice and is currently screaming as loud as possible at all times -- happy, content, sad or angry.
  • She can say Ma-ma, Da-da, Ba-ba, and Hi (although she doesn't really knows what she is saying all the time.)
  • Her reflux keeps her diet bland -- prunes and rice cereal for breakfast (so she poops!), lunch and dinner options include Earth's Best peas/brown rice, green beans/brown rice, pears, and pears & wild blueberries. As her meds kick in, we're attempting yellow and orange veggies again.
  • She would prefer to feed herself solids, but it's been difficult finding things that agree with her tummy.
  • She hates wearing a bib and tears it off the first chance she gets.
  • She will not hold still for a diaper change unless you REALLY distract her.
  • She must carry something at all times. Even if it is larger than her.
  • If there is music, she is usually bouncing.
  • She randomly stops in the middle of walking to squat. Sometimes in search of food, other times, well, not so sure..
  • She giggles at the drop of the hat.
  • She loves to play peek-a-boo.
  • She melts my heart with one look. (I know I've said it before, but it's oh so very true.)

    She's "Free"

    To My Emma Girl,

Wow, you are "free" years old today. I can hardly believe it! Before my very eyes, you have transformed into this little person, full of life and personality. You manage to keep me young while still giving me many, many gray hairs.

    IMG_5053

Let's start with you your unlimited amount of energy. Anyone who knows you will not argue the fact that you are ALWAYS on the go and ALWAYS running at top speed. The term "slow down" has somehow missed your vast vocabulary, even though I say it a million times a day. You are extremely physical and love anything that has to do with moving – dancing, kicking, running in circles. One of your favorite things to do lately is perform a little dance for our family with the music from Kendall's Gym-tastics tunnel. The best part of your performance is definitely the finale, in which you always have a new pose.

    IMG_5841IMG_5837

You also are fascinated with golf. Dancing I can relate to, but golf, well, you lost me. That is definitely more of a Daddy thing. The two of you like to go outside while Daddy hits his golf balls. You even like to watch it on TV and can recognize Tiger Woods. This explains your birthday gift from Daddy. He is convinced this passion indicates something about your future, but we'll see. For now, I just like the way you look in a visor. ;)

Your energy, of course, often gets you in trouble. You love your little sister so much that you often forget to be "gentle" – another word you hear very often. Your Kendall hugs overflow with love, but often end up in a tackle. Luckily, your sister doesn't care (most of the time). Her face lights up and her legs kick every time she sees you. No one can make her giggle like you, and I can tell she is already trying to keep up with you. This scares Mommy more than a little, but I know the two of you will be great playmates. Kendall has a lot to look up to.

    IMG_5814

You do play hard, but thankfully that means you also sleep hard. I often joke that you are either "on" or "off." You still take a great 2-hour nap for me every day and sleep about 10-11 hours a night (usually). Mommy truly thanks you for this because after a long day of non-stop go, go, go, I need a break too!

As of the last month, you sleep in a big girl bed and are doing great. Unless you have to go potty – or if someone fun like Auntie Jenni is over – you stay put until morning. You are still an early riser – 6 am – which I'm not so crazy about. I am still hoping we can somehow push that to 6:30am this next year!

    IMG_5764

You still love to sleep with Smooshy and your binkie and blanket, but you are just about to give up your binkie. For months we have discussed how when you turn three, you longer need it at night. We will be sending your binkies to Dr. Rojas so that a new baby can use them. You seem okay with the theory, but we'll see how this actually goes tomorrow.

Diapers are a thing of the past. You have been "potty trained" for the last year, but with the birth of Kendall and other developmental milestones, we have had our setbacks. But you are now fully trained and only wear undies, both at naptime and at night. Even at 3am, you let me know if you have to go potty and quickly go back to bed. I can't believe how well you have adjusted.

    IMG_4777

Your active spirit also likes to be fed. You love to eat! You have a full meal every time you sit down and usually eat every last bite. Your favorites are turkey hotdogs, rice noodles, avocado, canned green beans, and spaghetti and turkey meatballs (with sauce of course)! And fruit of ANY kind – blueberries, bananas, cantaloupe, honeydew, "applepines" – you name it, you eat it. We still haven't done dairy yet, but you have had some soy yogurt and rice ice cream – and pizza without cheese. We have noticed that "red" food like tomatoes and strawberries do make you break out around your mouth a little bit, so we limit those as well. Mommy is still hoping you grow out of all of this within the next year so you can enjoy some of the fun things in life like cheese and milk chocolate! For now you enjoy your "special cupcakes" and "special cookies" and really don't know any different.

    IMG_5608IMG_5310

You have a zest for learning and retain most of what you are told. Your favorite book right now is a Winnie the Pooh Animals encyclopedia your Uncle Johnny bought you. It's not quite the relaxing nighttime book I'd like to read, but it is the one you choose every night. You know that a baby Kangaroo is called a joey and that spiders have oil on their feet to keep them from sticking to their webs. I admit that Mommy has also learned a lot these past 2 months. In fact, you often correct Daddy and me if we forget a word or misread something.

Your vocabulary amazes me. I can hold real conversations with you, and I often forget how old you really are. The things that come out of your mouth are so grown up. Like the other day when you were leaving for Grammie's and said, "Call me if you need me. Okay, Mommy?" Or last week at the park when you told me, "I can handle it," when I attempted to help you climb up the "big kids'" ladder. You also have no problem reminding me when I'm not using "nice words" or when I am being crabby. We have already gotten in a few "No you're not/ Yes I am!" fights that have me very worried about your teenage years.

    IMG_5895

You are extremely passionate, which makes discipline hard, but we are working through it. Right now you are learning how to deal with your emotions. "I am angry of this!" comes out of your mouth a lot, complete with a scrunched up nose and sometimes a stomp or pound on the ground. Mommy tries to keep a straight face most of the time while we talk about what has made you so mad. Usually it's because you aren't able to do what you want. And trust me, you know EXACTLY what you want – and what you don't!

    IMG_5418

Independence has always been one of your strongest personality traits, and I have learned to just let you figure things out for yourself, no matter how much I want to help. Whether it's figuring out puzzles or washing your hands, "I can do it, Mommy" is always at the tip of your tongue. So I let you do it until you ask for help or get frustrated. I just pray that you know I am always here to help you, and that it is okay to ask for help once in a while. It is a lesson I only recently learned myself.

    IMG_5793

Your tough exterior only makes your loving heart that much sweeter. You love with such intensity that those of us that get to receive it can't help but feel special. Your kisses and hugs are truly a blessing to our hearts.

    IMG_5649

You have been through a lot this past year, and I can't even begin to tell you how proud I am of how you've handled it all. In addition to all of the changes that come along with being 2 years old, you also had to deal with Mommy's unplanned hospital stay and a new baby in the house.

    IMG_4829IMG_4912

We also moved you into Grandma and Grandpa's house, which you have handled extremely well. You love having your family around you all the time. I actually think you are going to be bored once our new house is built. As you often say to me during the day, "Where are all my friends?"

Emma, today you are "free," which is fitting in so many ways. My free-spirited little bunny that will forever keep me on toes. You do make me crazy a lot of the time, but you also make me smile and laugh more than anyone else can. You teach me patience; you teach me to relax; and most importantly, you teach me to rely on God. For He created you, and only He knows the plans He has for you. I just get the honor of trying to help you become the woman He intends. So far, I am more than proud of who you are and can't wait to see what the next few years hold for you.
    IMG_5845

I love you, Punky. Happy 3rd Birthday!

    IMG_5509
